Ascertaining ecological effects by environmental pollutants from a global perspective: that’s the core of research activity in my lab
My laboratory undertakes research on development of high-precision analytical methods, local and global contamination status, environmental behavior and fate, temporal trends, bio-concentration and -maginification features, toxicokinetics and risk assessment of environmentally persistent and bioaccumulative chemicals from a global perspective. Besides, using various environmental and biological samples stored in the environmental specimen bank (es-BANK), we also promote advanced studies of environmental chemistry and interdisciplinary environmental studies. Our research focuses on a global scale including terrestrial, coastal, oceanic, polar regions and a whole ecological system from plankton to terrestrial and marine mammals.
In addition, we try to provide scientific policies and ways to protect the terrestrial and marine ecosystems from environmental pollution by various chemicals, which is very important for the government and society.
Achieving unprecedented and world-class study results in the field of environmental chemistry
As a recent new finding, our study group demonstrated that unknown compounds with similar chemical structures as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which are well-known as endocrine disrupting chemicals, are present in the terrestrial and marine environment and have bioaccumulative properties, by using our comprehensive screening method developed recently. Now we apply the comprehensive screening method to various wildlife species inhabiting terrestrial, coastal and oceanic regions to find novel bioaccmulative substances, leading to scientifically new findings in the world.
I hope many students study hard in my lab and feel the excitement of the first achievement in the world. I also want to bring out students’ potential and ability through the research activity and to produce good researchers who can scientifically contribute to regional and global society.
